A recent story examined Rep. Jason Chaffetz's close ties with the dietary supplement industry and reported that Basic Research, a Utah dietary supplement maker, is promoting a new product with the claim, "Eat all you want and still lose weight" ("Supplement makers give big money to Chaffetz," Tribune , Oct. 20). The dietary supplement industry has a well-documented history of making false claims about its health products. Clearly, it continues to do so, apparently with Chaffetz's blessing.

Good luck to those who believe they can eat all they want and lose weight -- you're going to need it. As you clean your plates, perhaps you'll draw some comfort knowing your congressman is working fervently to support your interest.

More realistic voters need to ask themselves what kind of leader legitimizes and champions an industry that touts weight-loss pills for gluttons while labeling as a farce the science-based case for global warming.
