They Might Be Giants performed two shows this weekend: one Friday night at The Depot for adults, and one Saturday for families.
As soon as the New England-based pop-rock band started its 90-minute set Friday, I thought I had stumbled into the children's show, as the band led off its set with "Meet the Elements," a song from their recent children's album "Here Comes Science."
But that is the way the infectiously catchy band is. They performed about 30 songs, many of them lasting less than two minutes, always in the pursuit of a melody and a witty phrase. No wonder children love them, propelling the relatively old band into a profitable second career as the writers of educational songs for kids. Arguably, the band is at
the height of its popularity nearly 30 years after they formed. But it was an adults-only show, not because of obscenity or nakedness, but because patrons could buy a drink from The Depot's bar.
