Pittsburgh • Walk-on Coleman Petersen was the lone bright spot for Utah's special teams, as he made field goals from 23, 34, 39 and 45 yards Saturday in the Utes' 26-14 win at Heinz Field.
The 45-yarder, which came with 7:45 remaining in the game and gave the Utes a 19-14 lead, was the longest of his career.
The last time a Utah kicker had four field goals in a game was last year, when Joe Phillips made four in Utah's 68-27 win at Iowa State.
Petersen is 8-of-10 on the season. His misses were a 41-yarder that was blocked at USC and a 29-yarder he missed against BYU.
Petersen said he never imagined he'd have to kick four field goals in the game, but was ready.
"I definitely had a good week in practice," he said.
His performance drew praise from coach Kyle Whittingham, who has been critical of Utah's kickers this year.
"He had ice water in his veins," Whittingham said. "He's not a flighty or flaky kid, he's pretty squared away with his approach to the game. He had a couple disappointing kicks early in the year, but he has been working hard in practice and made the most of opportunities today."
Down and out
Utah's injury list continues to grow with tight end Dallin Rogers leaving the game in the first quarter with a season-ending knee injury.
Rogers was the Utes' second-leading receiver, with 21 catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns this year.
"It's a blow," Whittingham said. "He's a huge player for us. Luckily, Jake Murphy is almost 100 percent and Kendrick Moeai is back. Those two guys have to pick it up."
Leading receiver DeVonte Christopher (ankle), safety Keith McGill (shoulder), backup running back Tauni Vakapuna (ankle) and backup safety Michael Walker (illness) didn't make the trip due to health issues.
