BYU's first WCC baseball game was an eye-opener as they fell 7-2 to undefeated Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. Austin Hall had the Cougars' only extra-base hit.
BYU had a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but was quickly overtaken. The Cougars didn't score again until the ninth inning. BYU is now 2-2 on the season.
Softball
BYU split its opening day in the Cathedral Classic, losing to No. 21 Oklahoma State 3-2, then beating Pacific, 3-2 in Cathedral City, Calif. The Cougars launched comebacks in both games but were successful only in the second.
Track and field
Utah State's Chari Hawkins won a Western Athletic Conference Indoor pentathlon title on the first day of the conference championships in Nampa, Idaho.
The USU women's team has an early lead in the team scores. Freshman McKenzie Johnson won the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.60.
Skiing
Four Utes posted top-10 finishes at the Slalom Qualifier for the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association in Bozeman, Mont. Senior Tii-Maria Romar and sophomore Julie Bordeau took first and second, respectively, in the women's race.
Swimming and diving
Utah is in seventh place after the second day of the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash. All four of Utah's divers finished in the top 15, and Traycie Swartz broke the school record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.45 seconds.
