People in this state ski, board, fish, ride, hike, hunt, camp, climb.
Each Sunday, we have reflected active lifestyles in our Fit & Healthy section, which we excitedly launched last summer. Now we're doubling down.
We are expanding the section beyond its roots of focusing on healthy activity, healthy eating and a fitness column by award-winning sportswriter Lya Wodraska, who also is a personal trainer. We are moving the best of our Outdoors coverage into this section as well.
Based on feedback, readers have embraced Fit & Healthy, and we want to make it even better by offering a broader array of stories about and for those who embrace an active lifestyle. This move also reflects a national trend by news organizations to strengthen their Sunday print products, which continue to be extremely popular despite the overall trend of moving to digital offerings.
"While fitness and outdoors may seem like separate topics, they actually blend together nicely," said Kathy Stephenson, editor of the section. "I hope it inspires people to live better and to recharge their lives."
Stories will include the fishing, hiking, skiing and wildlife articles readers have come to expect from award-winning outdoors writer Brett Prettyman. We are moving some of our most popular outdoors staples such as "Where Is It" and "Hook Shot" to Sundays. And we've charged Brett to aggressively pursue more stories reflecting our love of action sports, such as rock climbing and backcountry activity.
That won't be a problem for Prettyman, who beyond being an author and recognized Utah outdoors authority is a member of the board of directors of the Outdoor Writers Association of America. The OWAA's primary mission is to inform the public about outdoor activities, issues and the responsible use of natural resources.
We've set the change for next week.
Simultaneously, we are moving our Monday coverage of Technology to Tuesday, and we're folding our regular Monday features content, such as comics, the daily TV listings and Scott D. Pierce's TV column, into the Utah section.
"Recharge" is one of the names being considered for the new and improved Sunday section, as is "Fun & Fitness." Got something better? Stephenson (email@example.com) would love to hear it. She'd welcome your story ideas, too.
